Since I’m between deadlines right now, I’ve had lots of time to play with yarn and listen to audiobooks. (I’m so glad audiobooks are having a moment! I hope it continues.)
Some of that yarn time has been at my spinning wheel. I got some weaving in. And then some poking around my yarn supply wondering what to knit. I’ve had specific projects to knit for myself or others recently — I wasn’t sure what to do with ALL the options.
I looked at a lace shawl for a while, and even wound 1800 yards of laceweight handspun into a cake. But then I questioned how the colors would look with the shawl and the yarn is still sitting on my desk.
Then I dug through again to see if I had anything for a cardigan — it’s getting colder and it’s been a bit since I knit a sweater for myself.
If I have sweater quantities of yarn, it’s usually because I found it on sale. I tend to buy one or two hanks of yarn at a time — not enough for a sweater. Or, if it’s fiber for spinning, 4-8oz, which is also not enough unless I started mixing different braids of wool together . . . which I could! But I haven’t.
So my options were pretty limited. I had a lot of gray alpaca. Very soft. Very fine, but I could double it up. But since it’s alpaca, I started worrying about it growing and growing. (Alpaca is so lovely, but it doesn’t have the springiness of wool. A sweater can become a dress over time.) I also had a blue . . . but again, alpaca. (How did I get here??) This one is mixed with wool, but is it enough wool to prevent it from growing? I don’t know. So I put it aside, too.
That left this Juniper Moon Farms Tenzing, which appears to be discontinued now — which is probably why I ended up with so much of it, if it was on clearance. After searching through the patterns I already have, I decided to knit Tudor Windows by Corrine Walcher. (The link goes to Ravelry.)
It took me a bit to get started, in part because I had an older version of the pattern and couldn’t find anywhere to get the update, but the designer was helpful and now I’m knitting along.
On my wheel, I have some white merino wool. I’ve also been contemplating my next weaving project. I have a few ideas — that gray alpaca yarn I mentioned before might be nice here — but we’ll see. I’ll probably have decided by the next time I send a knit night post.
Here’s the Castledale wool I spun. The wool comes from Beersheba Farm. I’ve bought a bit of wool from them in the past and I will absolutely buy more. All of it is amazing. (I count Wendy as a friend, but I’d say that even if I didn’t know her.)
I had 200g of wool, spun it in a three ply, and ended up with about 428 yards. It’s ridiculously soft and squishy.
And no, I have no idea what it’ll be. Usually, I just spin because it feels good. I figure out the rest later. (Which is part of why I have so many random skeins!)
I hope you having a great week!
