wow wow wow. This was a great, thorough read and I loved it. I feel like some of the details are things that are useful to keep in mind even for traditional publishing. Thanks Jodie for sharing this amazing post!

Yes, for sure it's worth keeping in mind how all this stuff works for any publisher! I know we have agents in part so that we don't have to worry about the business side as much, but it is in our best interest to be educated about the basics, at least!

I bet your agent will be able to talk you through most of these things before you submit anywhere! Or, if some are unknowns (like what rights they want to buy), you'll get that information in the offer memo.

I appreciated this long post - all the detail, all the considerations. It can be exciting when a new publishing model comes along, the potential can feel enticing, but you’ve also got to dig into the details to check if it is actually going to serve your editorial and financial goals. Thanks for looking at this so carefully. While the publishing industry needs to be shaken up, it's always the emerging writers who have the least power and need to understand what they're getting into.
