I'm so glad you enjoyed this! It was definitely interesting for me to start picking apart the things I thought Yarros did well and then try to articulate *why.* But I'm not kidding that it took an entire day to write this post so I'm going to need some recovery time before I do another one.
I haven't had the chance to get to this one yet but really enjoyed reading your breakdown! It's always interesting to see which books suddenly appear everywhere like this one did and why
I read the book this summer and devoured it on holiday. I agree with all your points and think it’s interesting to break it down in this way - fantastic idea 👏🏽
That’s a great way to view a book!! Absolutely like this book review-ish post that explains why it will become popular. Similar to you, I was aware of the book and it pops up on my ‘for you’ page on IG. But I didn’t get into it. I finally it just a few weeks ago because Onyx Storm is coming out.
I agree with you, the enemies-to-lovers trope combined with this unlikely hero girl and dark academia and also dragons/ fantastical aspects is what makes this book clicked. But I think one of the things Fourth Wing is so hyped is because of how plot-driven and there isn’t a scene that isn’t necessary.
The moment where Violet realises the fable is actually something real, this idea of gaining consciousness and her shock in realisation, also the political implications in the book is what makes me like it. Fourth Wing makes you reflect, think and invoke your feelings while capturing your heart at the same time. The whole series is so carefully plotted and everything is written for a reason.
Wow thank you for this very detailed breakdown of Fourth Wing 👌🏼 I haven't read it yet (I tend to avoid books that are hyped) but now I'm itching to see the structure for myself - that almost makes it a craft book right? 😉
Ah, I loved this!!! Your insight is amazing. This is the kind of discussion I'm dying to have with other writers. Can't wait for the next one :)
