Some news!
One is something *you* made happen! <3 Also, come see me in person!
A few pieces of news!
First, a good thing!
Yesterday, I got official word that NIGHTRENDER has earned through its advance! (Want to know more about author money works? I actually wrote a whole newsletter about it a few weeks ago.) What this means is that now, every time someone buys the hardcover or ebook1 of NIGHTRENDER2, I get paid a little more.3
This is great on a couple of levels — the obvious being that I can pay a few bills with it. (I know. It’s not glamorous or exciting. But I did make cinnamon rolls in celebration!) And also, it makes me look very good to my publisher and they’re more likely to want to buy more books from me in the future.
This is actually my third book to earn through its advance.4 My first book to earn through was THE ORPHAN QUEEN, and the second was MY LADY JANE. Now I get to add NIGHTRENDER to the list of books that exceeded expectations.
So, great all around! Thank you everyone who has bought a copy of NIGHTRENDER and/or recommended it to others. And to everyone who’s gotten it from your school or public library (those help a lot too!). Seriously, every single one of you has made a huge difference!
And hey, I don’t know how much longer it will last, but the ebook for NIGHTRENDER is still on sale for $1.99 in the US. Here it is on Nook, Kobo, iBooks, and Kindle.
Since I have quite a few new subscribers (heeeey!) and I’m riding high on that great news, this is probably a good time to mention the only giveaway I will ever run for knitted wings. All the details are in that post, but the short of it is this: If NIGHTRENDER gets to 500 ratings and reviews on Amazon5 before DAWNBREAKER6 releases (November 7!), then I will knit a new set of wings and run a giveaway for them.
I don’t know how many of you are actually interested in owning a 6-foot wingspan, but when I first started knitting wings a few years ago, a bunch of people asked if I was going to make some for giveaways. Considering these things take $40 (at least!) in yarn, and 50 hours to knit . . . no. Hah. I mean, you are all very precious to me, but that is just not something I have the time or cash for.
UNLESS . . . .
If we reach that magical 500 . . . okay. That’s how much those ratings and reviews mean to me. I’d spend hours and hours knitting something for a giveaway. (I don’t know how we’d do entries yet, but it would be something easy. Probably be a subscriber to this newsletter? Which you already are. You rock star.)
In-person event!!
If you’re in Virginia, come see me on April 29 at the Book Dragon Shop in downtown Staunton! I’ll be there from 12-3pm, signing books and chatting with anyone who shows up.
Even if you can’t make it in person, you can still order books. This is what they will have in stock on the day of:
If you want any other books from my backlist, make sure you contact the Book Dragon ASAP so they can get it in advance. They also ship internationally! If you’re interested in that, contact them so they can get you an actual quote on the shipping.
And now for some sad news. Book Depository is closing.
This stinks. For a lot of readers, Book Depository has been a reliable way to import books. A lot of giveaways have been run using Book Depository to deliver prizes, since they have free shipping to most countries. For years, it’s meant that international readers can be included in giveaways and new releases. I really hate to see this go. :(
Maybe something else will pop up in its place. If so, I’ll let you know. For now, if you want to grab any of my books from Book Depository before they close for good (just a few weeks from now), here’s the link.
And finally, I’ve sent out a few newsletters in the writing/publishing section. Here’s a roundup:
I have not written much (anything) in the yarn section in a while, but I have a few ideas. I’ve just been very busy with a deadline7 so I’ve had to prioritize posts that I thought more people get something out of. But if you have questions about anything — writing, publishing, yarn, my bird feeders — just ask and I will add it to my list of things to write about.
Remember, if you want to adjust what kind of emails you get from me, you can do it on this page. Just check the newsletters you want!
That’s all for now! I mean, aside from the fact that MY LADY JANE has finished filming and they are in the editing stage now.8 And the update that I got new glasses; I can’t wear contacts anymore so finding glasses I like is significant! And a friend managed to find a pack of the very specific balls Hush likes, so now we have a ton of them, and Hush is the happiest cat in the world.9
And, later, the paperback, whenever that comes out.
You can and should still get the audiobook! That helps me, too; the audiobook is what’s called a sub-right—my publisher bought it from me, then sold it to an audiobook publisher, so it’s a sort of . . . sub advance to earn through. And if this audiobook does well, then it will mean I have better leverage to get my other books made into audiobooks. I know some of you have been asking about THE ORPHAN QUEEN in audio for a long time. I’d love to see that, too!
At the appointed times.
Most books don’t earn through their advances. It’s really normal.
I love and appreciate reviews in all the places, but we can’t deny the power of Amazon reviews. They sell books.

It’s MY SALTY MARY. Coming Summer ‘24!
Sometimes if I think about it too hard, I want to scream with excitement.
She likes to play fetch with them. Her favorites are the darker colors, specifically the blue, but she also really likes the dark green and red.
Huge congrats!!! That's amazing!!
Congratulations!!!
